Cylinder Locks: Supply, Swap & Rekey — Capital City Locksmith

The cylinder is the part of the lock the key goes into. Swapping one is the cheapest way to change who can open a door without touching the rest of the hardware.

Getting the size right is most of the job. A euro cylinder that sticks out past the handle escutcheon can be snapped by hand, which is exactly how a lot of break-ins happen, so we measure each door individually rather than assuming.

Once sized, cylinders can be keyed alike across a building, keyed to a master system, or supplied in an anti-snap or high-security profile depending on what the door is protecting.

What the job involves

  • Measured per door

A protruding cylinder is a snap point, so nothing is assumed.

  • Keyed alike or to a master

One key for the site, or a proper keying hierarchy.

  • Anti-snap options

Where the door and the risk justify them.

Common questions

What is cylinder snapping?

Levering a protruding euro cylinder until it breaks at the cam, then opening the lock through the break. Correct sizing and anti-snap cylinders both defeat it.

Can you match new cylinders to my existing key?

Usually yes, if the keyway is compatible. Otherwise we rekey the whole set to a new key.

How long does a cylinder swap take?

Ten to fifteen minutes per door once it is measured.
